Family Information

Parents:          Daniel Crane (1851-) and Charlotte Crane, nee Smith, (1853-).

Siblings:         Minnie (1871-); George (1873-1949); Alice (1875-); Frederick (1878-); Edward (1880-1928); Charles (1883-); Ellen (1885-); Maud (1888-); Louisa (1889-1966); Leonard (1891-); Florence (1894-); William (1898-).

Alfred married Frances Moysey in 1894 and they had at least two children – Alfred Howard (1906) and Frederick (1909).  In 1911 the family lived at 21 Leopold Road, Bexhill on Sea but by January 1916 had moved to 58 Reginald Road, 

When Alfred died in 1956 he left his estate of £1249.10s.2d. to his widow, Fanny Crane.

First World War Experience

Alfred enlisted on 17th January 1916 when he was 38 years and 6 months old.  He was over 5’ tall with a chest measurement of 37” – expanded by 2”. Sometime in 1918 Alfred was tobogganing in an organized race when he had a spill and sustained a fracture of his left tibia.  This left him with a certain amount of disability and he was award a pension of 10s. 9d. per week for a period of 52 weeks.  There was an inquiry and it was determined that no-one was  to blame and it was a pure accident.

Alfred was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.
