The Saphead: Buster Keaton’s breakthrough silent classic

The film that launched Buster Keaton’s career is being shown at Bexhill Film Club.
The Saphead was made in 1920 and was Keaton’s first starring role in a full-length film.
The showing marks the club’s return after a two-month break while presenter Mike Hatchard was performing at the Edinburgh Festival. As always the club features silent films from the 1920s the way they were originally shown – with live piano accompaniment.
In The Saphead, Keaton plays Bertie, the son of the richest man in New York. He is disowned by his father because he shows no interest in work.
His attitude is only adopted to impress Agnes, the girl of his dreams.
But Bertie’s sister Rose is married to a struggling lawyer who plots to claim the fortune for himself. Time for Bertie to save the day…
