Family Information

Parents:          Joseph, b.1874, and Ellen, b,1874, Hazlehurst

Siblings:         Amelia (1903-1973) and Ellen, born 1910.

The family were living in Eastbourne in 1911 and Joseph senior was a Bathchairman.

First World War Experience

Unfortunately, we know very little of Joseph’s war service as his service records have not survived – not can his medal rolls record be found.  The following article appeared in the Bexhill Observer dated 17th November 1917:

“Private J. G. Hazlehurst, The Buffs, was killed in France on October 25th.  He was the only son of Mr. And Mrs. J. Hazlehurst, of Hastings, formerly of Cornwall-road, Bexhill.  He was only 19 years of age.

The article has recorded the date of death incorrectly as Joseph was actually killed on 12th October 1917 in Flanders.
