The family were living in Eastbourne in 1911 and Joseph senior was a Bathchairman.
First World War Experience
Unfortunately, we know very little of Joseph’s war service as his service records have not survived – not can his medal rolls record be found. The following article appeared in the Bexhill Observer dated 17th November 1917:
“Private J. G. Hazlehurst, The Buffs, was killed in France on October 25th. He was the only son of Mr. And Mrs. J. Hazlehurst, of Hastings, formerly of Cornwall-road, Bexhill. He was only 19 years of age.
The article has recorded the date of death incorrectly as Joseph was actually killed on 12th October 1917 in Flanders.
