Family Information

Parents:          William Smyth Fox (1839-1903) and Sarah Edith Fox, nee Reid, (1842-1929).

Siblings:         William Allen (1866-1900), Walter Herbert (1869-1917), Lionel Whitelaw (1870-), Kathleen (1873-), Edith Maud (1873-), Eva Violet (1875-1913), Olive (1879-1966), and Ruby Blanche (1880.1880).  All the children of William and Sarah were born in India.

Arthur died on 15th April 1917 when the ship he was on – the “Arcadia” – was sunk in the Mediterranean.  He left an estate of £4970.15s.2d. to his sister, Olive Lilian.

First World War Experience

It would seem that Arthur was a long-serving military man before the start of the Great War, stationed in India. He was travelling back to the East when the ship he was on was sunk.  His obituary in the local Bexhill newspaper said that he was “late of the Junior Naval and Military Club, Piccadilly, Middlesex”.  He had, obviously, been awarded the D.S.O. at some point in his history but, unfortunately, no further details can be found of his service.
