Family Information

Parents:          William John Sothcott Evershed (1860-1933) and Ada Charlotte Evershed, nee Avery, (1856-1908).

Siblings:         Ruby (1893-1923).

Lionel married Dorothy Louisa Brooke (1896-1965) in 1917 in Battle.  They had one child – Peter Douglas (1918-1977).

First World War Experience

Lionel enlisted in 1914 and was posted to the Royal Sussex Regiment.  Sometime later he was transferred to the Army Pay Corps.  On enlistment he was 5’3” tall, weighed 116lbs and had a chest measurement of 32” – expansion 2½”.  He had brown hair, was of a ‘fair’ physical development, and his vision in both eyes was 6/6. He had two marks on his left arm from his vaccinations in 1901.  He had a small faint scar across the chest bones and was found to have a pulmonary systolic murmur.

Apart from being in the Eastern Theatre of War nothing else is known of Lionel’s war service and no medals appear to have been awarded – although, as this is unusual, it is more than likely that the records are incomplete.
