Family Information

Parents:          Frederick English, born 1857 in Hastings, and Annie English (nee Apps), born 1859 in Hastings.   Frederick was working as a Bricklayer and Labourer in 1901.

Siblings:         Ethel English, born 1888 in Hastings.

In 1905 Frederick George married Ellen Spooner, born 1883 in London, in the Battle registration area. They had at least one child – George Frederick English, born in 1907 in Bexhill on Sea.

First World War Experience

As Frederick’s service records have not survived we have no real details of his war service – apart from two mentions in the local newspapers.

The first, dated 27.2.1915, says that he is one of the ‘Latest Recruits’; and the second, dated 15.5.1915 shows a photograph of Frederick with the following legend:

“Sapper T. G. English, of the 2nd Home Counties Royal Engineers (T) was for 15 years employed at the Devonshire Dairy. His home address is 113 Windsor-road.”

Although this article says his initials are T. G. there is no doubt at all that it should read F. G.

No details can be given of Frederick’s war medals as there are several English’s in the records but none can be confirmed to be this Frederick’s. It is certain that he would have been awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal but other medals might have been awarded of which we are not aware.
