Ernest enlisted sometime in 1915 into the Army Reserve from where he was posted to the Royal Sussex Regiment.  Before his demob he was again transferred to the Queen’s (Royal West Surrey) Regiment.  No Service Record survives for Ernest but we know from a local newspaper that he was wounded in the early part of 1917.
