Family Information

Henry Broad (1857-1935) and Bertha Down Broad, nee Potter, (1860-1924).

Siblings:         Nelson (1880-1903); Albert Frank (1886-1921); Arthur Robert (1889-1972); Gladys Lilian (1892-1978); Ada Beatrice (1895-1977); Alice Mary (1900-1916); Phyllis Margaret (1905-1974).

Henry married Emma Jane Grimshaw (1881-1956) on 17th January 1907 in Bexhill. They had four children – Harry Nelson (1907); Violet May (1911); Evelina Sylvia (1913); Bertha Joan (1916).

First World War Experience

Henry enlisted on 28th November 1915 when he was 32 years 7 months old.  He was over 5’ tall with a chest measurement of 34” – expansion 2”. His religion was Church of England and Emma, his wife, was given as his next of kin.

Sometime during 1916 he was disabled with haemorrhoids which gave him a 20% disability and he was awarded a small pension for a short while until his problem had been solved.

On 4th March 1917 he was posted to India and was finally demobbed on 26th November 1919.

Henry was awarded the British War Medal. When he took receipt of this medal the family had moved to 35 St. James’ Road, Hastings.
