Blackeney served in France and received three medals:-  the Victory, the British, and the Star.

It was reported in the Bexhill Observer 19th September 1914 under the heading “Sussex Regiment Losses” and the death of Captain Jemmett Browne that “Lieutenant H.E.H. Blackeney and Lieutenant L.L. Bayne are wounded”.
