Family Information
Parents: John Berry (1851-) and Mary Ann Berry, nee Tester, (1845-).
George married Caroline Hobday on 6th December 1902 in a church in Eastbourne. They had three children – Caroline Nellie (1903-1992); George Albert (1909-1985); Gilbert Henry John (1912-1996).
First World War Experience
George enlisted before 17th October 1914 and a photograph of him appears in a local newspaper dated 2.10.1915 advising that he was then a Sapper in the Royal Engineers. Another article appeared on 13th July 1918 which reads:-
“Lance Corporal George Berry, R.E., whose home is at 106, Windsor-road, has received the British Empire Medal for distinguished service in air-raids in London.”
Other than that we have no records on how George spent his war service. There are a number of George Berry’s serving in the Royal Engineers in the Medal Rolls listing but nothing to tell which is our George.
