The Changi Cross: A Symbol of Hope in the Shadow of Death

18 November @ 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm

The Changi Cross

The story of a relic from the Second World War is told in the second November lecture in the museum series. There is a powerful Bexhill connection to the story too.
The Changi Cross is a small brass altar cross which was designed, forged and engraved by three Far East prisoners of war for a makeshift chapel when they were held captive in Changi, Singapore in 1942.
The prisoners took the cross with them when they were moved to construct the Thai-Burma railway.
They struggled to keep faith and hope alive under appalling conditions.
The survivors brought it back to Changi for their final year of imprisonment. It was brought to the UK when the war ended.
In a strange sequence of events it brought an orphaned son closer to the father he never knew.
The speaker for the talk on Wednesday 18 November is Louise Reynolds. It takes place at St Augustine’s Church Hall, starting at 2.30pm.Booking is not required, you Just turn up at the venue.
There is a charge of £5 (£4 for museum members). Tea and coffee are available at £1.50. All transactions by cash please.
