Stepping out to the wreck of the Amsterdam

23 August @ 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm

A 2019 photo of the wreck of the Amsterdam at low tide.

Join us on this familiar walk at low tide to explore the events leading up to the wreck of the 18th century Dutch East India Company cargo ship Amsterdam, off Bulverhythe, on January 26, 1749. Sensible footwear is strongly advised as the walk involved stretches of shingle and wet sand. Walk leaders: Neil Bates & Alex Markwick. Duration three hours.

Please note that shingle and sand build up this year has buried parts of the wreck and that it may not be as fully visible to visitors as it has been in the past.

Meet on Galley Hill by the Coastguard Station. Please do not park cars in Bridgeway, or near the railway footbridge opposite the wreck site. There is a charge of £5.00 for adults and £2.00 for accompanied children. Local public transport timetables should be consulted regarding availability on the day. The walk leaders are Museum volunteers and all proceeds go to Bexhill Museum.
