SUMMARY:History of the Normanhurst Estate\, home to the Brasseys
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Bexhill History Hour and the remarkable story of the Normanhurst Estate at Catsfield near Battle. Normanhurst Court was a vast Victorian country house built in 1869–70 for railway contractor Thomas Brassey\, later associated with his son\, Thomas\, 1st Earl Brassey. The talk explores the Brassey family’s achievements\, Liberal politics\, imperial service\, Lady Annie Brassey’s collecting and travel writing\, and the estate’s later lives as a First World War military hospital\, girls’ school and POW camp. Demolished in 1951\, its grounds survive today. Presented by David EP Dennis\, Associate Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

DESCRIPTION:Join local historian Ken Brooks at Bexhill Museum for an illustrated journey into the world of Ancient Egypt. Beyond the great pyramids\, mighty monuments and famous pharaohs lies a vivid story of everyday life. Drawing on evidence preserved in tombs and temples\, this talk explores the beliefs\, customs and working lives of ordinary Egyptians\, whose images and stories have survived for thousands of years. Discover how religion shaped society\, why the Egyptians were so concerned with immortality\, and what tomb paintings can tell us about farming\, crafts\, family life and work. The event takes place at Bexhill Museum on Saturday 13 June at 1.30pm. Pre-booking is advised.

SUMMARY:Young Simon de Montfort and Dante Alighieri
DESCRIPTION:What is the connection between the great Italian poet Dante Alighieri\, and the young son of Simon de Montfort? How do the River Thames and Old Winchelsea become a part of the story? What shocking events happened at Viterbo in Italy during Papal High Mass? In Bexhill History Hour David EP Dennis relates the terrible tale of mistaken identity and the gradually degenerating life of Young Simon after the Battle of Evesham in August 1265. \nThe story of Dante himself also comes to light- how he wrote his great set of Paradise Poems and what happened when he was banished from Florence to live deep in the hills of the Italian Apennines. We also examine how the psychological damage to the mind of Young Simon after seeing his father killed\, turned his head to piracy\, vengeance and eventual ruin. Using illustrations and photographs\, we travel from England and across Europe in our search for the Rivers of Blood and the causes of this tragic series of events.

SUMMARY:Tai Chi in Egerton Park
DESCRIPTION:Join Bexhill Museum for a relaxing outdoor Tai Chi session in the beautiful surroundings of Egerton Park. Suitable for beginners and experienced participants alike\, this gentle form of exercise is known to improve balance\, flexibility\, coordination and overall wellbeing. The session will be led by Sally Hemmings\, who has been teaching Tai Chi for 14 years and specialises in a style designed to support people living with arthritis. The event takes place on the lawn behind the museum from 11am to noon on Saturday 27 June 2026. Participation is free\, although donations to support the museum are warmly welcomed. Please wear flat shoes and comfortable clothing suitable for light outdoor exercise.
