DESCRIPTION:Kate Marsden was one of the most remarkable women of the Victorian age. A pioneering nurse\, explorer and humanitarian\, she is best remembered for her epic journey across Russia and Siberia in search of better treatment for people living with leprosy. She also co-founded Bexhill Museum\, leaving a lasting legacy to the town. \nIn this illustrated Bexhill History Hour\, historian David E. P. Dennis explores Marsden’s extraordinary achievements\, the royal support she received from Queen Victoria and the Empress of Russia\, and the personal controversies that later overshadowed her reputation. It is a fascinating reassessment of an exceptional woman whose contribution to Bexhill and to Victorian history is once again being recognised. \nThe talk takes place at Bexhill Museum on Thursday 9 July\, from 2pm–3pm. SUMMARY:Understanding Fossils
DESCRIPTION:Fossils have made a big contribution to our understanding of the origins of species\, reconstructing ancient environments and figuring out continental plate movements. \nIn this area we have a variety of fossilised remains including plants\, fish and dinosaurs. Ken Brooks gives a talk about Understanding Fossils for his next informal lecture on Saturday 11 July at the museum\, starting at 1.30pm. \nNote this is a change to the previously announced talk on Fossil Folklore. Similar – but different. Tickets are £10 (£8 for museum members) which includes refreshments and entry to the museum galleries. There are plenty of fossils on display which you will be able to visit either before or after the talk. \nTickets can be reserved by calling into the museum or by phoning 01424 222058.
