Klein Hollandia: The shipwreck that sparked a war
9 September @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
A second chance to hear the background story of the wreck of the17th-century Dutch warship Klein Hollandia. The then unknown shipwreck was discovered in 2019 off our coast and since then has been under intense study – on land and under the sea.
Mark Beattie-Edwards, principal investigator at the Nautical Archaeology Society (NAS) and his fellow divers will join us at the end of the team’s latest expedition to share their experiences bringing the ship’s history to light.
Built in Rotterdam in 1654, the Klein Hollandia was involved in all the major sea battles of the Second Anglo-Dutch War between 1665 and 1667. It was armed with 44 guns at the time of its loss on 24 March 1672. Her captain Jan Van Nes and fifty other people died.
The project is jointly run by maritime archaeologists from the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands, the NAS and Historic England.
Tickets to the talk are £10 per person (£8 for members) and available from the museum in advance, and if available, on the day.
