Saturday Talk: The First Life Forms

13 July @ 1:30 pm - 4:00 pm

Canada's Burgess Shales

Canada’s Burgess Shales contain the fossils of the planet’s first life forms, which lived around 500 million years ago, and were discovered by Charles Walcott in 1886. These amazing creatures are spectacular to see and very different from the later species that later populated our planet. Popular local expert Ken Brooks discusses the unique exoskeletons, limbs and even internal organs preserved by the shale fossils. He also discusses what the sudden emergence of these life forms, both flora and fauna – an event known to palaeontologists as the Cambrian Explosion – meant to the future of planet Earth.
